Co-founders Sylvia Jiang and Davis Reinhart began their collaborations together while both attending the Music Academy of the West’s summer festival in 2018. Over the years, they began to recognize commonalities between their goals of establishing a new kind of educational and performance experience for artistically underserved communities. Despite each continuing along their own individual studies as musicians, they began working together to turn this dream into a reality.
By 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic sparked the idea of a name for this new artistic dream as a result of observing the food bank lines that stretched throughout New York City. Muffin Music would represent a program that caters to communities in need, offering ways to showcase the artistic talent already present, while providing accessibility to new ideas and artists. Furthermore, creating performance venues that can put classical music in unexpected places.
In 2021, Davis Reinhart received a compositional commission from the City of Buellton’s newly established Arts and Culture grant program. He was tasked with writing a piece that would represent and embody the community of Buellton, and for the piece to be premiered the following summer of 2022.
This provided our co-founders with the perfect opportunity to finally put their ideas to the test and create their program of Muffin Music that would be launched at the first ever Buellton in the Park Festival, just in time for the celebration of Buellton’s 30th Anniversary. We hope to offer the Santa Barbara County community, and communities to come, with ingredients of music that can feel both homemade and new. Not only from the performances that we present, but the education that we provide to people of all ages, offering them the resources they need to become future artistic leaders.
Muffin Music promotes arts and culture through the presentation of musical events and the implementation of music education programs. We are particularly committed to providing the opportunity for communities to experience an international-caliber of music making, while simultaneously fostering local musicians.
